Innovation through Imagination

10 May 2021

Wellington College International Tianjin has registered two teams for this year’s Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior, in the AI for Health and AI for Accessibility categories. Teams of 6 pupils (Years 10-13) have collaborated on their projects in school and through MS Teams meetings and Office 365 online tools, and we are proud to say that both of our teams have been ranked within the Top 30 teams in China and have proceeded to the World Cup!

What is Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior?

Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior 2021 is a worldwide contest that provides students aged 13 to 18 the opportunity to learn about technology and how it can be used to positively change the world. The focus of Imagine Cup Junior is on the following:

Microsoft AI For Good initiative

Pupils come up with ideas to solve social, cultural and environmental issues in the following areas - AI for Earth, AI for Health, AI for Accessibility, AI for Cultural Heritage, and AI for Humanitarian Action

21st-century skills

The Imagine Cup Junior presents a great opportunity for students to develop and practice communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

What our pupils had to say about Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior

‘I think that the Imagine Cup Junior is a very good opportunity to inspire us to think about some of the global problems that many of us are suffering from … It has also let us explore the most advanced technologies … The more depth we stepped into the project, the more we found out the urgency of solving the problems.’

‘I enjoyed taking part in the Microsoft imagine cup junior competition, it gave me a chance to think about the problems in this world and how we can use AI to solve them. It was also a great opportunity to work in a team and collaborate with other people.’

‘I enjoyed participating in ICJ because I get to talk to people who have similar interest with me and get familiar with people I wanted to talk to but didn’t get a chance’

‘As a person who enjoys volunteering in helping others, ICJ2021 helped explore ways which AI can be involved in helping people.’
