2019/20 Exam Results – a stunning success for Wellington pupils

04 Sep 2020

It has been a year of stunning success for pupils at Wellington College Tianjin. Setting record results at all three stages of our public examinations – IGCSE, AS and A Level – in a normal school year would be a great achievement, but given the unprecedented disruption caused by the coronavirus, it is remarkable.

Our A level pupils move on to some of the world’s leading universities as a result of their outstanding achievement:

74%  A*/A

95%  A*/B

100%  A*-C

This compares to 38% A*/A in schools in England and places Wellington at the very front rank of schools across the world. Whilst all individual performances are worthy of comment, Ezra’s 6 A* grades stand out as a remarkable statement of his ability and diligence, but four other pupils achieved straight A*/A grades as well.

At AS level, an examination taken at the end of year 12 and often used as a strong indicator of further success to come at the end of year 13, Wellingtonians again performed superbly. 76% of grades were awarded an A (there is no A* at this level) – 15 pupils scoring straight A grades - and 90% A/B grades. These pupils now go on to apply to some of the world’s elite universities at Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Ivy League schools in the US, safe in the knowledge that they are as well prepared as any young people for the challenge ahead.

At IGCSE level, pupils once again proved to be in a class of their own.

65%  A*/A

90%  A*/B

Five pupils scored all A*/A grades.

Everyone in the Wellington community will join in congratulating our exam candidates for their success, but also to note how admirably they all coped with the difficulties of studying through the coronavirus closure. Mr Jeffrey, the Master, commented that, “I could not be more delighted for our exam candidates. Not only have they shown that they can compete with the very best students from around the globe, but that they have consistently conducted themselves as model Wellingtonians: independent, resilient, and  consistently supportive of one another throughout this very difficult period.”
