IGCSE Top in China Award

31 Oct 2025

At Wellington College Education (China) - Tianjin, we believe that the purpose of education is to unlock each pupil's potential and pave their way to excellence. We are delighted to share that our Year 12 pupil and academic scholarship recipient, Michael, has achieved outstanding results of 10 A*-A grades in his IGCSE examinations. Notably, his exceptional language skills earned him the "Top in China" award for IGCSE First Language English. Furthermore, in the 2025 Cambridge Upper Secondary Science Competition, his team's innovative project, "Creating Bioethanol from Food Waste Using Yeast", secured the highest honour in China – Best in China

We recently sat down with Michael for an in-depth conversation to hear about his learning experiences, competition journey, and personal growth.

The Academic Path: Balancing Efficiency and Method

"Receiving the academic scholarship has been a tremendous encouragement and a continuous source of motivation for me," Michael shared. "I am very grateful to my teachers for their attentive guidance and constant encouragement. Their support has given me the confidence to keep exploring and striving for excellence."

When asked about his feelings upon receiving his exceptional IGCSE results, Michael said, "After the results were released, I discussed them with several classmates, sharing our learning experiences. My parents were very pleased; while they are proud of what I have achieved, they also encouraged me to build upon this foundation and keep progressing. I am truly thankful for their support in providing a stable life and learning environment, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies."

During his IGCSE studies across multiple subjects, Michael demonstrated traits of a new generation learner: technologically adept and highly creative. He not only utilised online resources flexibly but also actively employed AI tools to enhance his learning efficiency. He elaborated, "I use large language models like DeepSeek, ChatGPT, and Grok to help me structure course content, resolve difficult questions, and analyse patterns in past papers. Additionally, I have experimented with tools like Suno to turn key concepts into songs, making it easier to listen and reinforce my memory during my spare time." Michael also highlighted the school's active role in providing technical support: "As a Microsoft Showcase School, Wellington provides us with a high-quality and secure AI learning environment. Our Computer Science teachers offer specific guidance on how to use these tools effectively, and the Copilot feature within Microsoft Teams has been very practical, offering significant assistance in our daily studies."

When facing academic pressure, Michael has developed his own coping strategies. "I work through practice questions to consolidate knowledge and build confidence. I also switch between different subjects, or relax by taking a walk or listening to music," he explained. Additionally, content such as popular science videos, science fiction, and new weird fiction serves as an important channel for broadening his perspectives and stimulating his thinking.

Scientific Competition: From Kitchen Waste to Sustainable Energy

In the 2025 Cambridge Secondary Science Competition, Michael's team stood out with their project on producing ethanol from food waste via fermentation. He explained that the inspiration came directly from observing food waste in the school canteen. They transformed this everyday issue into a research topic, actively exploring solutions for sustainable energy and proposing innovative ideas for campus and societal sustainability.

Within the project, Michael was primarily responsible for conducting the experiments, coordinating the team's progress, and drafting the report. The most significant challenge the team faced was "synchronising everyone's schedules." To overcome this, they made full use of fragmented time during breaks and after school, enhancing communication to advance the project step by step. "The moment we successfully distilled ethanol using our setup, everyone was incredibly excited," Michael recalled. "This experience gave me a deep appreciation for the power of teamwork and the thrill of scientific innovation."

Holistic Development: Balancing Academics, Competition, and Passions

Beyond his academic and scientific pursuits, Michael is passionate about game development, badminton, building computers, and speed cubing. He shared his secret to time management: "Previewing lessons before class, maintaining focus during lessons, and utilising fragmented time effectively." This approach allows him to navigate smoothly between his studies, competitions, and personal interests.

Future Aspirations: Rooted in STEM, Reaching for the World

Looking ahead, Michael has a clear direction – he plans to delve deeper into the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). He expressed that the liberal environment and the support from his teachers at the college have laid a solid foundation for him.

Michael extended his particular thanks to the school and his teachers: "The school provides us with ample room for development, and the teachers have given me crucial guidance and support in both my academic studies and project work."

From his academic achievements in IGCSE to his innovative practices in the Cambridge competition, and from his exceptional language skills to his solid scientific literacy, every step of Michael's growth stems not only from his personal diligence and intellect but is also supported by the diverse platforms, abundant resources, and expert guidance provided by the college. This vividly embodies Wellington's educational philosophy of the 'holistic education'
