"All shortcuts are detours—Embracing diverse passions creates the most meaningful path forward."

This year, Sanika, one of our Y13 pupils, received an unconditional offer from the Bachelor of Science in Technology and Innovation at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), along with a scholarship offer for Computer Science from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her journey—rooted in interdisciplinary exploration, hands-on innovation, and community leadership—reflects how a holistic education can shape future-ready pioneers.

A Broad Foundation: Thriving in IGCSE’s Diverse Landscape

Sanika joined Wellington in 2022 as an IGCSE pupil, drawn by the curriculum’s flexibility. She immersed herself in Design and Technology (DT), Art, and Textiles, alongside core subjects, discovering how diverse fields intersect. Project-based learning in DT honed her problem-solving skills, while artistic courses sharpened her creative analysis. This broad foundation taught her to connect classroom knowledge to real-world challenges—a skill that would later define her academic trajectory.

A Level Choices: Courage to Follow Her Passions

When it came to selecting A Level subjects, Sanika defied convention. Determined to pursue Computer Science and Technology at university, she could have opted for a conventional STEM-heavy lineup. Instead, she chose a path less travelled: pairing Computer Science with Design and Technology. She opted for Chemistry and DT alongside Mathematics and Physics. “Design isn’t just ‘art’—it’s problem-solving,” she explains. “In a tech-driven world, understanding user experience, sustainability, and aesthetics is just as crucial as coding.”

In her Design and Technology studies, Sanika transformed theory into practice by designing an innovative sensor-equipped storage system for badminton equipment — a project inspired by her dual role as a passionate player and captain of the school team, where she observed the recurring challenge of disorganized shuttlecocks on court.

Beyond the Classroom: Where Passion Meets Purpose

Sanika’s learning extended far beyond exams. At Wellington, she seized opportunities to innovate, collaborate, and lead:

????

Microsoft Imagine Cup: Mentored by Mr Markovic, Director of Educational Technology, Sanika competed for two consecutive years. In 2023, her team Bananabots designed an app to combat obesity; in 2024, Heritage Hipsters created solutions to preserve cultural heritage. Sanika led video production as director, editor, and cameraman, showcasing her technical and storytelling skills.

Vex Robotics & Computer Science ASA: As part of the curriculum, after – school – activities at Wellington is a great way for pupils to explore and extend their interests. She joined robotics to explore engineering, then launched a Computer Science ASA to share her coding passion with peers. Recognizing the importance of hands-on science, she co-founded the Science Experiment ASA, turning theory into tangible discovery.

EPQ: AI for Sustainable Farming: In Y12, Sanika was selected to complete a year – long research project led by school teachers. Sanika’s Extended Project Qualification merged her tech interests with a desire to address global challenges. She researched AI-driven solutions for India’s agricultural challenges, exploring how technology could mitigate famine—a project deeply tied to her heritage and aspirations.

Leading with Heart: Community and Values

Sanika joined the Values Committee of Student Council the year which she enrolled in school, and became the head this year. Her dedication springs from deeply personal roots: “Joining Wellington was a big change for me as it is quite different from my previous schools. But it did not take me long to find friends and get included in the school life.” She reflects. “I especially like the 'buddy' concept as you get assigned to a classmate in your house who helps you adjust in the first week or two. That was my first step towards being included by a group of friends who helped me with finding my classes, getting lunch together, and becoming more familiar with them.”

Driven by this conviction, she launched ice-breaking activities for new pupils, fostering intergrade connections and ensuring inclusivity from the very first day. Her creative programming extended to wellbeing-focused projects like the whimsical "Bring Your Stuffed Animal to School" day and diversity-centred efforts such as Sign Language Promotion Week – both transforming abstract values into shared community experiences. In spearheading these programs, Sanika demonstrated remarkable dedication and perseverance. She tirelessly revised her proposals and devoted significant time to collaborating with facility staff and teachers, ensuring each activity resonated with Wellington’s ethos.

Initially planning to pursue Computer Science in the US, Sanika reconsidered during application season after consulting her university counsellor. While acknowledging the fierce competition at top US STEM programs, she turned her attention to Hong Kong's dynamic education landscape. Hong Kong offers unparalleled internship opportunities with 9,300+ tech firms and multinationals like Tencent and HSBC actively recruiting STEM graduates. The government's Technology Talent Admission Scheme further streamlines employment for international graduates in innovation fields

During her research, the Technology and Innovation Programme (TIP) at HKU's School of Innovation emerged as an ideal match. Launched in 2023, this cross-disciplinary program combines technical rigor (AI, data science, IoT) with entrepreneurial training through its partnership with Hong Kong Science Park. Its selective admission (25 pupils annually) ensures personalised mentorship from faculty with industry experience, while the "Living Lab" curriculum connects pupils directly with startups and R&D centres.

During the admissions interview process, Sanika was tasked with developing and presenting an app concept to the faculty. Drawing on her competition experience and her interdisciplinary academic background in seemingly unrelated subjects, she crafted a solution that uniquely blended technical innovation with social impact. In addition, the faculty expressed particular interest in her decision to pursue DT, a seemingly unusual choice. By highlighting skills, she developed through DT projects —such as collaborative prototyping, user-centred research, and systems thinking — Sanika demonstrated how her "unconventional" academic journey enriched her problem-solving approach. Her capacity to integrate insights from non-technical fields into tech-driven solutions not only captivated the interview panel but also underscored her unique value as an applicant who thinks beyond traditional boundaries.

Advice to fellow peers:

“Never underestimate yourself, and do not let others define your capabilities. I believe everything happens for a reason, so you will see the result of everything you do now in the coming years. Work hard, play hard!”

Admissions Tips:

With its strategic location, diverse course offerings, and favourable work visa policies, Hong Kong has emerged as a top choice for families seeking international education opportunities. Our counselling team maintains close collaboration with leading institutions like HKUST, ensuring parents and pupils receive expert guidance for informed decision-making. Below are key insights shared by the HKUST Admissions Officer.

1

Scholarship Opportunities

Hong Kong universities offer generous merit - based scholarships for qualified international pupils.

2

Competitive Programs vs. Equal Evaluation

Popular programs (e.g., Engineering, Biochemistry) are highly competitive, but no quotas restrict international applicants. All candidates are evaluated equally once minimum requirements are met.

3

Holistic Admissions Approach

Beyond grades, universities prioritize well-rounded profiles: extracurricular achievements, internships, research experience, and personal statements. Showcase your unique story and how you’ll contribute to campus diversity.

4

Interview Preparation Is Key

Interviews play a pivotal role in admissions decisions. Typically conducted in two formats—group and individual—these sessions assess candidates' academic proficiency and teamwork capabilities.
