Happy Chinese New Year

图片

In traditional Chinese culture, Chinese New Year is not merely a significant festival; it is also a time to promote national heritage. Recently, the Mandarin Department organised a series of traditional cultural activities during Chinese Culture Week. These activities provided pupils with an enriching learning experience, allowing them to gain a deeper appreciation of the richness, vibrancy and charm of Chinese culture. Red lanterns, spring couplets and traditional Chinese decorations adorned the campus, immersing pupils in the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year.

During Chinese Culture Week, Nest teachers collaborated with the children to make dumplings, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the fun of food preparation.

Under the theme of “Welly’s Wonderful Journey around China”, the children explored various cities in China through cheerful songs and dynamic dances. The performance of “Kangding Love Song” allowed both the children and the audience to appreciate the beauty of the plateau and provided a fresh perspective on this classic song.

This year’s Junior School Chinese New Year performance was themed “Blessed Warm Night”.

On a cold winter’s day, the children transformed into toy fairies, accompanying a lonely old grandpa to celebrate a warm New Year’s Eve. The Mandarin teachers also organised a Chinese New Year Garden Party where pupils created ethnic paintings and made traditional Chinese cakes.

Chinese Culture Week at the Senior School began with a captivating Chinese debate competition. The pupils showcased the beauty of language arts through their clear thinking and fluent expressions. The Chinese New Year performances were equally engaging.

The “Spring Festival Music” piano and violin ensemble set a serene and warm tone, while the interactive programme “The God of Fortune Sending Spring Festival Couplets” amused the audience. The highlight was a dynamic erhu performance of “Horse Racing”, vividly illustrating the excitement of horses galloping.

Winter Fair

The pupil lion dance team, along with a professional lion dance team, initiated the Charity Winter Fair amidst audience cheers, marking the highlight of Chinese Culture Week. The fair featured more than 40 stalls, including those organised by pupils from various houses, with each “stallholder” striving to attract “customers”. The inheritors of Tianjin’s local intangible cultural heritage also showcased their exceptional skills during the event.

Through this series of activities, Wellington College Tianjin not only enriched the cultural experiences of our pupils but also made a step forward in preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture. We hope this cultural bond will foster the exchange and integration of cultures, helping every pupil develop into a global citizen.
