Chinese Drama Show “Secret Love and Peach Blossom Land” presented by our Wellington pupils
Last term, Wellington Chinese Drama Club dedicated “Secret Love and Peach Blossom Land” came to the stage. The play was a representation of the director Stan Lai. It combines two unrelated plays – a tragedy (Secret Love) and a comedy (The Peach Blossom Land) – on the same stage, mixing seriousness with banters. The play is considered an iconic mainstay of contemporary Chinese theatre. Wellington pupils presented a spectacular performance for the audience.

Back in September 2021, at the Chinese Drama Club internal conference, the success of the previous show "Thunderstorm" gave great encouragement to all members. After two rounds of voting, "Secret Love and Peach Blossom Land" has been selected as the show for the next year. I am very surprised that pupils would choose such a play with high difficulties in terms of performance, equipment and technical management. It is a pleasure to see young people’s passion for Chinese contemporary drama.
Although we anticipated the difficulties we might face, we could not expect that the show would eventually come out on stage a year and a half later, in February 2023. During the preparation, we experienced many challenges, the show day has been postponed a few times and almost half of the cast graduated from school. Having said that, every time I ask the pupils, “Shall we continue?” The answer has always been “Yes”. The spirit that pupils have shown is truly valuable.

I really enjoyed the show. We had been preparing for a long time, and we had thought we couldn’t be able to do it all. While after a year's delay, it was finally presented. The plot of Secret Love and Peach Blossom Land is fascinating, and the experience was unique.

Everyone worked super well with each other. Two people from the props team couldn't make it before the show, so another student and I volunteered to help with the lighting and setting up right before the performance. We worked well together and the show went smoothly in the end.
Chinese drama is a pupil-centred extracurricular activity. From deciding the drama, writing scripts, and auditioning, to stage performance and backstage coordination. They are all dominated by pupils with assistance and supervision from teachers. Pupils are able to practice communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills during the process. It’s great to see their development and growth through the activities.
