Pink Day was a great opportunity for the FoW (Friends of Wellington) to arrange a community-wide event that not only aimed to educate and inform but also to raise funds for a very worthwhile and important cause. Working together the school administration, pupil leadership team and the Friends of Wellington (FoW) mums put together a programme covering a range of activities over an entire week.

Despite the limitations because of restrictions to the campus from the wider community, the event managed to raise over 14,000 RMB.

Breast cancer affects countless women and their families but with the help of governments and charitable organisations worldwide, progress is being made in the quest to identify and treat breast cancer in a more timely and effective manner.

The Senior School Student Council and the events committee gave presentations in assemblies for the Junior and Senior Schools, sold ribbons and badges, and promoted the Pink Day fair. The entire community came together on Pink Day, dressed in Pink, and gave donations, and our FoW mums came together to run stalls selling homemade cakes and treats, toys, and books.

Mrs Randall

School's Parent

Mrs Randall, one of the organisers of the event said, “ I began assisting with the planning of these events in 2016. I was initially anxious and concerned that perhaps no one would help, but fortunately, I wasn't alone, and with the assistance and support of the parents from the school, we were able to succeed.

My Aunty passed away due to breast cancer. It was a difficult moment for our family because there was no institution or group in our  neighbourhood at the time, and no one knew that breast cancer could be cured. I am therefore committed to raising awareness of breast cancer. Hearing about other people's triumphs over cancer is incredibly encouraging.  Through the FoW, I've met many people who have since become my friends”.

Two of the parents who took part in this year’s event commented, “My daughter came to study at Wellington three years ago and this is the third time I participated in Pink Day. My mother Was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago. After surgery and rehabilitation, she has recovered her health. I can never forget my family's worry and fear during that time. So, when I learned that Pink Day could raise donations for more breast cancer patients in need, I didn’t hesitate to join.

In addition, I always think of Wellington as a big family, in which there are not only students and teachers but also parents. Parents have the responsibility to support school activities in any way they can. Therefore, I’m willing to participate in such activities as Pink Day. I want to make my daughter feel proud of her contribution to the school and proud of me”.

“When asked to join pink day that year, I was still a housewife who just started to come out for events and activities and was getting to know more about Tianjin and Wellington.

It made me feel good to be able to help the cause and I have been genuinely enjoying it all: walking with all the beautiful pink ladies by our pretty Hai He; trying to be the earnest saleswoman at the charity bazaar; Having pink lunch with all my old and new friends and talked and chatted about life, children and charity in smiles and laughter; they were such beautiful and meaningful memories. I do know indeed in my heart that I’ll be there next year too”.

We would like to thank the entire Wellington College community for their support and look forward to running Pink Day next academic year.
