Online Christmas Concerts 2021 at Wellington College Tianjin
From the Director of Music
Shih-Shih Chen
As the Michaelmas term ends, we will be streaming all of our winter shows across the different phases of the College. For those of you who may have missed the shows, this is a perfect opportunity to catch up with what the pupils have done in the past few months. Even for those who attended the shows, it is still worth celebrating the achievement of the young performers who have worked so hard over the past few months. During the streaming events, you will be able to view the Nest Christmas show, the Junior School winter show, and the whole school winter concert, all of which present collections of songs and instrumental performances for a range of audiences. The choice of music demonstrates a good balance of two themes which often go hand in hand at this time of the year: winter and Christmas.
The Nest Christmas Show - A Winter Wonderland - showcases how music can benefit a child’s development. I was amazed by how well they coordinated their Orff performance of A Winter Wonderland. The Magic of Song: Walt’s World, presented by the Junior School, features classic Disney songs and mini-drama segments. Several Senior School musicians also played in the pit orchestra for the show. It was a pleasure to see how cross-key stage collaboration was implemented at the highest level in the College. The full school Winter Concert presented an array of festive songs and pieces, ranging from orchestral, choral, small ensemble to solo works. From the start, you will hear two very uplifting fanfares and it climaxes at the end with a heartwarming performance by the Wellatonics.
Without the dedication of the teachers in my department, Stella Sun and Hyunhi Kim, I doubt these performances would have been possible. I would also like to thank my wonderful Music Leaders, Kelly, Billy, William and Kai, as well as the pupils in the backstage crew for their mighty efforts, incredible teamwork and support over these past weeks. Speaking of teamwork, I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful colleagues in the marketing department who have worked tirelessly to facilitate the streaming of these performances.
I would like to think of these shows as my holiday gift to the Wellington community, and to take this opportunity to wish everybody happy holidays!
All the best wishes,
Shih-Shih Chen
